Although in the State of Mississippi, Vicksburg is just across the Mississippi River from Louisiana, and not far from Tallulah on Interstate 20. We've traveled through Vicksburg frequently, and visited local attractions on numerous occasions.
And we've made the trip down The Great River Road, U.S. Highway 61, from Vicksburg to Natchez and St. Francisville several times, and love the green, rolling hills along the way: a highly recommended route!
Founded in 1811 and incorporated on January 29, 1825, Vicksburg's strategic location on the Mississippi River gave the new town importance as a center for commerce, agriculture and river traffic. By 1846, the Vicksburg & Meridian Railroad became the only east-west railroad between Memphis and New Orleans.
The city was later the site of an important Civil War battlefield. The Vicksburg National Military Park was established on February 21, 1899, to commemorate the siege and defense of Vicksburg. Today the park is operated by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service.
The park documents the campaign, siege, and defense of Vicksburg. The city's surrender on July 4, 1863, along with the capture of Port Hudson, LA, on July 8, split the South, giving control of the Mississippi River to the Union.
Over 1,340 monuments, a restored Union gunboat, and National Cemetery mark the 16-mile tour road. Shown below is a photo gallery of the Military Park taken in November, 2010. For more information, contact the Vicksburg Military Park website.
It is also the location of a successful gaming and casino industry, and a major tourist destination.
Five casinos are in Vicksburg, all on the banks of the Mississippi River: Ameristar, Horizon, Diamond Jack's, Riverwalk, and Rainbow, each with its own hotel and restaurants. Vicksburg Zip Codes are in the range 39180 - 39183. The Area Code is 601.
Vicksburg, the county seat of Warren County, offers a variety of accommodations for tourists and visitors including numerous B&Bs and motels and hotels.
Lodging is available throughout the city, including properties convenient to Vicksburg casinos and those adjacent to the Vicksburg National Military Park, and along Interstate I-20.
Other popular attractions include Catfish Row, the U.S.S. Cairo Museum, the Biedenharn Coca-Cola® Museum, and ante-bellum homes such as the Anchuca Mansion.
